Curricular Misunderstanding

Making a difference

Problem:

PreK-8 private school’s decline in enrollment partly due to uncertainty about curricular coherence—whether the curriculum adequately prepares for competitive high schools—which is both cause and effect of an undercurrent of misunderstanding about the school’s progressive mission.

Task:

  • Language Arts and math curricular audit to assess scope and sequence on paper and in practice
  • observe alignment between teaching of subject matter and school’s mission
  • build confidence of experts on the faculty who can take lead in the absence of a mentoring program

Outcomes:

(as of this date)
  • significant support for new Head of School in her work to build confidence in the school
  • organized discussion of skills gaps and and strengths
  • firmer commitment to a clearer scope and sequence and agreement on materials
  • judicious adoption of some strong “off the shelf” curriculum to balance out and complement school’s original and progressive design
